How the time limit checker works

        1. Enter your goal time for a half marathon, or switch to I know my pace and enter your pace per km.
        2. Filter by region if you only want races near you.
        3. Read the three groups. Races where you finish with at least 15 minutes to spare, races where it is tight, and races where your goal time is over the cut-off.

The list only includes upcoming half marathons from our calendar whose organiser has published a time limit. Limits are checked against official regulations, but they can change from one edition to the next, so confirm on the race website before you enter.

        Typical time limits in Spain

Time limit Pace needed per km Who it suits
2:15:00 6:24 Regular runners with some race experience
        2:30:00 7:07 Most runners, including many first-timers
3:00:00 8:32 Run-walk strategies and relaxed first halves

Most Spanish half marathons close the course at 2 h 30 min. Big-city races such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia or Málaga usually allow around 3 hours, while some small town races are stricter.

        Why leave a margin?

Your goal time is a plan, not a guarantee. Heat, wind, hills, crowded starts and toilet stops all cost minutes. Many races also start the clock with the gun, not when you cross the start mat, so if you start near the back of a big field you can lose several minutes before you even begin.

As a rule of thumb, aim for at least 10–15 minutes between your realistic finish time and the cut-off. If a race lands in the tight group, look for a race with a more generous limit or a flatter course.

What happens if you miss the cut-off?

Rules vary by race. Usually a broom vehicle (coche escoba) follows the last runners, and road closures reopen behind it. Runners behind it may be asked to leave the course, move to the pavement or board the vehicle, and may not get an official time. Check the regulations (reglamento) of your race.

        Frequently asked questions

Is the time limit based on gun time or chip time? It depends on the race. Many Spanish regulations measure the limit from the start gun. If the rules do not say, assume gun time.

My goal comes from a 10K result. How do I convert it? Use the race time predictor. It estimates your half marathon time and links straight back here.
