Three races joined our February calendar, and one of them has a story: Girona’s half marathon is back after more than ten years away. Here are the new February races, and how they fit with the rest of the month. See also the February calendar.

Girona, 28 February: back after a decade

The Mitja Marató Ciutat de Girona began in 1995, ran 22 editions and stopped in 2016. The city council and two triathlon clubs bring it back as the 23rd edition on Sunday 28 February 2027, at 8:30 from the Pavelló Municipal Girona-Fontajau. The course crosses Girona, Salt and Sarrià de Ter and is described as urban, fast and with minimal elevation: about 61 m of climbing.

It has caught on fast. Registration opened on 1 September at 18:00, the first 3,000 bibs went in two hours and 4,000 of the 5,000 places were taken within a day. Prices stepped from €27 for the first 500 entries to €42 for the rest, and €1 of each entry goes to a local care project. If you want a place, check the race page for what is left.

Don Benito, 14 February: marathon and half

The 2nd Maratón y Media Maratón Popular “Ciudad de Don Benito” in Extremadura is two laps of an urban circuit from the Plaza de España for the half (four for the marathon). The half costs €22 until 1 November and €25 after that, and entries close on 4 February. The first edition’s regulations gave 2 hours 30 minutes for the half, and every finisher gets a medal. It’s a different race from the town’s October half, the Virgen de las Cruces.

Calderona, 28 February: a mountain half

If you’d rather run on trails, the Mitja Marató de la Calderona in Serra, near Valencia, is 21 km with 1,150 m of climbing through the Sierra Calderona. It starts at 7:00, is capped at 340 runners, and entries close on 1 February. It sold out in 2024, so don’t wait.

28 February is crowded

Besides Girona and the Calderona, the last Sunday of February has four more half marathons confirmed: Bidasoa, Terrassa, Cambrils and Xàtiva. If Girona sells out, Terrassa and Cambrils are the other Catalan options.

Choosing between them

  • A comeback with a crowd: Girona.
  • Small and cheap in Extremadura: Don Benito.
  • A technical challenge: the Calderona.
