Four New December Half Marathons in Spain: Sun, Dalí Country and Small-Town Finishes

· Updated · Zoltan

Runners on a coastal road between black volcanic rock and the Atlantic on a sunny winter day

December is a quieter month for road racing in Spain, which makes four new entries on the calendar worth a look. They are very different races: a point-to-point coast run in Lanzarote, a countryside loop in Dalí’s hometown, a small-town half in Extremadura and a seafront race south of Barcelona. For everything else, see the December calendar.

Lanzarote, 5 December

The half marathon is one of three distances in the Lanzarote International Marathon weekend. It’s point to point: it starts on Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen and finishes in Costa Teguise, with a shuttle from the finish back to the start (book it in advance). The time limit is 3 hours 30 minutes, every finisher gets a medal and the entry fee is €70 until 25 November. The organisers’ pitch is about 21 °C and blue skies, which is the point for most people who come.

Figueres, 6 December

The Mitja Marató de Figueres loops out of the city through Vilatenim, Vilabertran, Peralada and Cabanes and climbs back into town. Catalan calendars list the 10th edition for 6 December, but the organisers hadn’t published 2026 details when we checked, so the page describes the 2025 race (€25, 2 h 30 limit, three aid stations). Figueres is also home to the Dalí Theatre-Museum, which is a good excuse for a weekend.

A small, friendly race in the Campo Arañuelo in northern Cáceres. The 16th edition starts at 11:00 at the Pabellón Antonio Jara and passes through the neighbouring village of Millanes de la Mata. According to the organisers’ regulations the field is capped at about 500 runners across the half marathon and the 10K, and every finisher gets a shirt, a medal and a runner’s bag.

Vilanova i la Geltrú, 13 December

The 37th Mitja Marató is two laps from the municipal athletics track through the old town and along the seafront, with about 90 m of climbing. Last year’s course guide found the wind and the tight turns tougher than the hills, and pacers ran from 1:25 to 2:00. Don’t confuse it with the Montornès–Montmeló–Vilanova–La Roca half, a different race in April.
