Half Marathons in Spain: The Complete Guide
· Updated · Zoltan

Spain is one of the best countries in Europe to run a half marathon. It has mild winters, a huge number of races, very affordable entry fees and courses ranging from world-record-fast city loops to hilly Camino stages. This guide covers what I wish I’d known before my first Spanish race: when to go, which races suit which goals, how registration works, and the handful of Spanish words that make race day easier.

When is half marathon season in Spain?
Spanish race season is the mirror image of northern Europe’s. Summer is too hot for road racing across most of the country, so the calendar is packed from autumn to spring.
- October–December: autumn classics. Big fast races like Valencia, the Bilbao night race and, from 2026, Seville in December.
- January–March: peak season. Almost every weekend has several races, from Santa Pola and Getafe in January to Barcelona, Málaga and Zaragoza in February and March.
- April–June: spring and island races. Madrid, Rock ’n’ Roll Madrid, Vig-Bay, Formentera and the Camino race Os 21 do Camiño in June.
- July–September: very few road half marathons. Use it for base training.
Best half marathons in Spain for a personal best
If a PB is the goal, look for a flat, certified course, a big field for drafting and a cool time of year:
- Valencia (late October): the fastest half marathon course in the world, almost flat, with ballot entry.
- Seville (December): a single loop with around 26 m of climbing.
- Barcelona (February): Gold Label, 30,000 runners, fast since its 2019 course changes.
- Málaga (March): a seaside loop with about 24 m of climbing.
- Getafe (January): Madrid’s traditional winter PB race, with eight pacer groups.
- Castellón and Santa Pola (January): flat Mediterranean courses at quieter races.

Most scenic and unusual half marathons
- Os 21 do Camiño: 21 km on a stage of the Camino de Santiago, with bagpipes along the way.
- Vig-Bay: point-to-point along the Atlantic coast from Vigo to Baiona.
- Formentera: from La Mola lighthouse across the whole island (bibs by ballot).
- Segovia: starts beneath a 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct. A hard course, but unforgettable.
- Zubiri–Pamplona: net downhill into Pamplona alongside the Camino.
- Night races: Bilbao, Mérida and Cáceres start in the evening, and Magaluf starts late afternoon.
How registration works in Spain
- Online, through timing platforms. Most races use sites such as RockTheSport, Deporticket, Sportmaniacs or local timing companies. The race page on this site links to the official website.
- Tiered pricing. Fees rise in steps as race day approaches. Many smaller half marathons cost €10–25 if you enter early, and big-city races €30–70.
- Day licence. If you don’t hold a Spanish athletics federation licence, some races add a small one-day insurance fee (often around €3).
- Medical certificate. Generally not required for road races in Spain. You usually tick a health declaration when registering.
- Bib collection. Normally at a runners’ fair or sports hall the day before, sometimes on race morning. Bring photo ID and your confirmation (often a QR code).
- Time limits are real. Many races close at 2 h 30 min, and some at 2 h 15–2 h 20. Check before entering, and use the pace calculator to compare.
Race-day tips for Spanish races
- Start times are usually 8:30–10:30 in the morning, except the evening races above.
- Aid stations are typically every 5 km with water, and bigger races add isotonic drinks and fruit.
- Heat and sun: even in March, southern Spain can reach 20 °C by 11:00. Bring a cap and sunscreen.
- Wind matters on coastal point-to-point races (Chipiona–Rota, Vig-Bay, Palma).
- Dates move. Seville moved from January to December in 2026 (first to 29 November, then to 13 December because of the general election), and Madrid and Elche moved to April for 2027. Always check the official site before booking travel.
