Urolako Trena Half Marathon (Zumarraga–Azpeitia) 2027
Not announced yet. Estimated from the usual date pattern; check the official site before booking travel.
- First edition: Sunday 22 February 2026
- Point to point on the old Urola railway, now a cycle path
- Net downhill of about 300 m
- Created for the centenary of the Urola train
The Urolako Trena Maratoia is one of the newest half marathons in the Basque Country. It was created for the centenary of the Urola train (Gure Trena), which ran between 1926 and the 1980s, and its first 21 km edition was on Sunday 22 February 2026.
A course on the old railway
The race runs on the former railway line, now a bidegorri, between the Zumarraga and Azpeitia stations in Gipuzkoa. Railway engineers kept gradients gentle, and this section is almost all descent: about 300 m of net drop over the distance. It’s a point-to-point race, so the finish isn’t where you start.
What the profile means for your time
A net drop that big makes for fast splits. But it is far more than the 1 m per kilometre World Athletics allows for record purposes, so don’t use a result here as a flat-course PB predictor. If you want a time to compare, other Gipuzkoa races include the Bidasoa half a week later and the Azkoitia–Azpeitia half marathon in March.
What’s next
The organisers have said they want to make it a marathon in future editions, helped by the planned extension of the cycle path to Zumaia, which would restore the whole old railway route. The next date isn’t confirmed. Calendars list 21 February 2027, so keep an eye on the official channels, or on the race website and its Instagram account.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions: Urolako Trena Half Marathon (Zumarraga–Azpeitia)
Where does the Urolako Trena half marathon run?
It follows the former Urola railway line, now a bidegorri (cycle path), from Zumarraga station to Azpeitia station in Gipuzkoa.
Is it a fast course?
It is almost entirely downhill, with a net drop of about 300 m over 21 km, which is the quickest profile on our calendar on paper. That much descent is far beyond what World Athletics allows for record purposes, so times aren't comparable with flat certified courses.
When is the next edition?
The first edition was on Sunday 22 February 2026. Race calendars list 21 February 2027, but we haven't seen the organisers confirm it, so check the race website or its Instagram account (@urolako_trena_maratoia).
How do I enter?
Entries for the first edition went through Rock the Sport. For a new edition, look for the organisers' link on their website or social accounts.
